Week 100

This week has been another good week. The temperatures have really cooled down a lot which is nice. They are supposed to go back up really high again the next few days. Welcome to summers in Washington. So first off there is a big fire in the northern part of our mission that they are having a hard time keeping contained so if you could please include this in your prayers that would be awesome. They are sending up groups of members to help clean up what has just happened to the Wanatchie area. Unfortunately our stake was not invited so we are not able to help. It would be a lot of fun to do that. The stake right next to us gets to go so thats kind of lame as well. Anyways, we had a few good lessons this week with some of our investigators. On Monday we found 2 new investigators which was really awesome. They committed to read the Book of Mormon. We had a return appointment for later that week, but they weren’t there. SO now we got to try and track them down again like most of the people we teach. This summer has been rough because of the fact that no one is home. Most of our investigators are convinced that august in the month that they want to be taught. So we have been counting down the days when they get off of vacation and finish summer classes so that we can meet with them again. But they Lord is really helping us find more people to teach. We have set a goal as a mission to have every companionship find 2 new investigators a week. We are doing are part and acting in faith.

We had a lesson with a part member family this last week. She told us that she was getting really nervous because of she is going into surgery this on Wednesday. We talked about faith and how we can have faith that the Lord will watch over us. She then requested that we giver her a blessing. The blessing went really well. At the end of the blessing she was in tears and said that that was so powerful and that the whole time she felt like she was floating and really warm like someone was hugging her. We were happy that the spirit was recognized and that she was feeling a lot better. We are going tomorrow one more time to see them before she got up to Seattle for the surgery.

We had a lesson again this week with our messianic Jew friend. She is slowly coming around. I can tell you that I have learned a lot from studying for her. I never knew how complex the Law of Moses really is. But in short she does not understand how the law has been fulfilled because it does not say that in the bible. . .  Yeah If I had a dollar for every time someone has said that to me I would be walking away form my mission with a lot of money. The best part is it truly does say all things that we believe in the bible. I have found it. So I never really know what people are talking about when they say that its not in there. . .  because it is.

We had district meeting this last week on how to teach people and not lessons. Its always a really good reminder. I feel like there are times when I am really good at that and times when I struggle. Its hard to always be on your game at all times. To know the needs of the people that you teach. But its a good thing to always remember. We had an awesome sacrament meeting again this last week. There are a lot of really powerful speakers in this ward. A lot of really good experiences that they talk about. It seems like the bishop is having the speakers talk about some topics that are really being stressed on for this day and age. Things like following the prophet and trusting that he really is a true prophet and also the dangers of pornography. It seems like the bishop is really striving to address the needs of the ward members.

I made a PBnJ sandwich the other day and as I went to spread the peanut better this is what happened. . .  I made a wave out of the peanut better. It was really cool. I just had to take a few pictures to always remember the awesome sandwiches that I make. I got that from Ryan actually the king of making sandwiches.

The Yakima Stake had a trek this last week. All the kids came back with fun stories about the adventures that they had. They seemed to have very similar experiences as we did on our trek. Kids getting ran over by handcarts, and having a blast while working hard in the heat. They actually got rained on the first two days so they had to push through the mud. That sounded not to fun.

Well I guess that is all for this week.

Week 99

That is awesome to see that everyone is having a good time. I can’t believe Ella now has a few new pets. I wonder how long it will take for midget to eat them up. . . You better keep them away form one another. I remember when one of our birds almost got eaten by the Zimmerman dog once. That was somewhat of traumatic experience for the bird. It even lost some of its head feathers because of that. So keep him away.

We have experience a lot of amazing miracles this last week. I just wanted to start this letter of this way. Elder Daw and I hear form time to time form people that we talk with about how wicked the world is becoming and how some people are legitimately scared and are preparing for the end days. I just have to say while yes there are some things to come in the future, must we not forget that the Lord is still completing his work. He is still working and will continue to work. I can’t help but look at all of these amazing things that happen each and every day that might go unnoticed if you were not looking for them. Here are a few of them form this last week.

On Tuesday we had an appointment with a lady that we had been in contact with for a little while. We brought a member with us to this appointment. The spirit was so strong. The lady opens up and talks about how she is looking for a church that her whole family could enjoy. She had grown up Jehovah Witness and her husband was some other faith I cant quite remember what he was. She talked about how she really wanted to know what we believed and what not. So we were able to teach her the restoration and giver her a copy of the book of Mormon. She committed to read it and asked us to stop by in a few weeks when she is done with this big project thing that she has to complete for her work. There are still people here that want to hear about the restored gospel. We are so excited to show her how the gospel will bless her family. The member that was with us did an awesome job explaining about how the gospel blesses our family and how it brings us closer together.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday we were out in the country and we swung by to see one of our potential investigators. She was home, which was a miracle, and she had a few minutes for us to talk to her. We talked to her about the book of Mormon and how she can read it and find out that it is true. She told us that her mom is actually a member and how she went to church a few times when she was younger. She does not remember much but she did like it. So we talked a little longer and were able to giver a copy of the book of Mormon and then left it at that. This is the cool part. About 3 day later of so we get a text message for her saying that she had been reading in the book of Mormon and had a question. We both read that are were supper exited. We asked what the question might be. Later that day she responded and said that she found the answer. Something about Joseph Smith. She had been reading his account and the account of the others that had seen the plates. Then the next day she texted us again and said that she had another question. She said, I know that Nephi the Father of Lehi who is being persecuted, but what record is Nephi writing? We were so excited when she said that as well. She has been reading and understand parts of what she is reading. Its been cool. That has never happened to us before.

After that lesson we went down the road to go and see a less active lady. She was home as well. She is going through a lot of hard times. This was one of the many days that we have had this week where it has been over 100 out side. She comes out of the house and starts talking to us about her life. It was so hot. We were roasting. So I said a silent prayer asking that we would not die and be able to help her. We talked to her for a little while more and then as we were leaving elder daw said that even though it was really hot outside, he did not feel it all that much. I said the same thing and said that I had prayed that we would not be hot. It was an answer to our prayers.

We also was able to catch a part member family later that night that we never are able to get in. We were able to get to know them. They slowly starting to open up to missionaries. We are excited to go by and see them again sometime.

The next day we had transfers. They put me in charge of directing the transfer site in Yakima. Its the midway point of the mission. So everyone the goes up north and down south meet there. So everything went well until we get a text from the assistance saying that they left the tri cities like and hour and a half late. So we had to wait form them and when they finally came no one wanted to listen and it was so hot. But we eventually got everyone where they needed to be. SO that was another miracle.

We had a zone breakfast and a zone leadership counsel meeting on Saturday. We had a good discussion on goals and plans that we are going to make to help us reach our goals as a zone and a mission. We have all felt really impressed to be using the members a lot more to help us with this work. We find that when we really act in faith and use the members in each teaching opportunity everything goes a lot better. Plus its hard to help people come to church if they do not have any friends. We were talking with a recent convert about that and she said that if it was not for her friends that  helped her along the way she would have never made the choice to be baptized. Its was another answer to our prayers that we need to have members more in everything that we do.

There are a few missionaries in the zone that are training. We are always excited to have new missionaries. They are always way excited to get to work. Its fun to help them get into the work.

We had a crazy Sunday yesterday. We had ward counsel meeting and then 3 hours of church. We had to then jet over and have our stake correlation meeting. Everything is going well there. The work in this area is on fire. There are some unites in this area that are baptizing almost every week. The members down there are doing an awesome job helping to find and fellowship. So after that meeting we were invited to teach mission prep. We were very excited to do that. I love teaching mission prep. We talked a lot about become true disciples of Jesus Christ and how we can develop charity. We finished by talking about how we can use the book of Mormon in every aspect of the work. The spirit was strong and it seemed like they really enjoyed hearing form some full time missionaries. A few of them have their calls and will leave in October and other times. We are so blessed to be able to serve at this time. So blessed. The Lord is poring out miracle after miracle.

We have found that as we act in faith more with our planning the day always goes so much better. We have been really working hard at following the spirit in planning and the Lord is showing us the way. Oh we also had an investigator come to church yesterday!! She has been talking about coming for some time now and she finally took the step of faith and loved it. Church was also so full of the spirit. I was happy that she came that week. We even had a musical number with the piano, Violin, and a guitar!! That was the first and probably the last time I will ever see the guitar in sacrament meeting. They received special permission to use it. They played come thou fount of every blessing and they played it in a way the the old pioneers might have played it. Its was awesome. We talked to her after and she said that she loved coming to church and she is going to come tonight to the ward activity that we are having. It will be fun to have her their. Well, I think that is the most of what has happened this week. I know this church is true. I love this work more then anything else.

Week 98

Sounds like all is good in Florida. Happy that all is unpacked.

We received transfer calls on Saturday. Elder Daw and I are both staying. We are really excited about this. This week has been really hard — not going to lie. All of our investigators are going away for like 2 to 3 weeks and we are having a hard time getting in touch with all of the other investigators. We also had a few people try our faith. That gets old real quick. I am okay with questions if there is never a hidden agenda. They always make statements that never make sense and they never let us go. We make it a point not to ever contend back. We just patiently wait for the time that we can teach and testify. To all who read this let me make this clear. God is the only one who decided who is going to Heaven and Hell. No one can tell you whether you are going to Heaven or Hell. Only God decides that. So if anyone tells you otherwise keep in mind who’s plan this is and how they have no authority to say that. Then politely say that we are going to find people that are actually interested in learning more about our message and leave. Love and pray for them and ask for their heart to be softened one day.

We had interviews with President Ware this last week. That was really nice. We talked about some very insightful things. We talked about some awesome memories that we have had together. It was comforting. I really felt the spirit. We also had a really good exchange with the Assistants. I always learn something new when they come out with us. It seems like the Washington Kennewick Mission is growing. We are receiving 28 new missionaries this week. It’s sad to see another group of them go home. Missionaries that I have grown really close to. I guess it’s the next step but yet it’s sad.

I have been learning a lot of good things from the spirit. We had an awesome lesson today about sacrifice in gospel principles. It’s cool so see how sacrifice is always a part of living the gospel. It’s hard, yet a very essential part of coming unto Christ. I love how the prophets of old knew there was going to be a falling away, yet they did all they could because they knew the things that they did then, would really effect us in our day. They knew that not a lot people would accept now, but later on in God’s plan. Talk about sacrifice.

Well I guess that is all for this week. I love you all.

Week 97

Happy 4th of JULY everyone. We had a really awesome 4th. In the morning we helped a family pull out a bunch of apple trees. They had been torn down already, but they left the roots so the roots grew into small trees. It was our job to excavate the small trees and the root system to get rid of them for good. It was quite a task but a lot of fun at the same time. It was really rewarding. So after that we went and changed and tried to get some proselyting done for a little while. We saw that the family had signed up to feed us that day for dinner and her cooking is famous all around the ward/valley. She cooks the best food ever. We went and were greeted by tons of extended family from all over the USA. They were cooking all sorts of Asian food. All of the husbands had served in Japan and their wives were all Japanese! So we had all sorts of good food. She even made homemade sushi. I have never had homemade sushi before! We took a picture of 2 caterpillar rolls that she made for us. They were full of eel and other good stuff. Here is a picture. So after dinner we had to go home early and do some planning. So we did some planning and that was good and after that we went into the backyard of the house and sat on the trampoline and tried to see some fireworks. We were somewhat successful. We saw a few. So that was a good 4th of JULY.

We also had MLC this week. It was sad because I had to say goodbye to Elder Hatch one of my companions. He had an awesome testimony. It was all about our Savior Jesus Christ. That’s what this work is all about. It’s all about Him.

So on Wednesday evening we were walking down a residential street. We quickly tried by a potential investigator and after that we were walking back to the car when we saw a BMW driving down the road. We didn’t think much of it and then all of a sudden we heard a huge crashing noise and looked up to see that BMW smashing into the front end of another car. We both said, “Well, we just witnessed a car crash.” And of course you know me, I can’t just sit and watch in those situations so I quickly walked over to see if everyone was alright. The two boys that were passengers in the BMW were all right. They just had a bit of seatbelt burn but other than that they were good. The lady in the other car was fine. She was very calm and everything was fine for her. After that I walked over to check on the driver of the BMW as I was walking over I heard her scream out, “My dog is dead!!” I went to go see what I could do to help. She had a few cuts on her face so we got a lady from a nearby house to give us some bandages to stop the bleeding. She had some bruises on her legs and seat belt burn. She was fine. Before she got out of the car I asked if she had any neck pain or any pain on her body. She stood up and got out of the car which I was not to happy about because we didn’t know if she was seriously hurt or not. She starts to talk with the other lady that she was in the crash with. There were no kids the cars which was nice. Unfortunately the dog that was sitting on her lap was no longer alive. It was somewhat sad to see it take its final breaths, luckily I was the one to see that and not the driver, yet again. The police were called and the paramedics came as well. We were able to say what we saw to the police and then we were able to go on our way. We then went to go and see a less active man in the ward. He let us in. He said that this was the perfect time to catch him. We were able to talk with him for quite a while about the gospel. We were able to ease his nerves and help him see that when he includes God in his life how even the hard times that you go through will become easier to carry and go through. The spirit was so strong. It’s crazy how the Lord always has a plan and a perfect timing for everything. That he put us missionaries in the path to help those in need. One thing right after another. I love this work.

This work is amazing. This plan is amazing!! I love it so much. At this point I feel like every little second means so much. I feel so much pressure at this point. I feel like I am on a time clock that does not have much time left. I can’t take it, yet I feel so much peace and happiness as I do all I can each day. Well, my time is short. I love you all.

Week 96

So to start of this letter I would just like to say that Elder Daw and I have both discovered that we both have a real “love” for the movie Saturday Night Warrior’s. We have been quoting it all week long and laughing so much. It’s been a blast. We both have had “wonderful” experiences in the past with sisters who played that movie over and over again. Our favorite is to quote the song with Jimmy  and all of his friends and the family. It’s a classic.

So fun fact. There is a lady in our area whose dad is the voice of Lemuel from the living scriptures. We had a good laugh quoting that movie as well and I told her that me and my sisters quote that movie all of the time. We then started quoting all of her favorite lines. She thought it was funny how we knew so much of the movie. It was good.

So after we went to the temple we had a lesson with one of our investigators that the less active lady brought. We were able to teach them about the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Before we went into the lesson we had a thought that we should use the pamphlets that we teach. We grabbed them last second from the back seat. We taught them and it was a wonderful lesson. We were able to help them understand a little more about the importance of the Book of Mormon and about Joseph Smith. After the lesson was over our investigator said that it was really helpful to have the pamphlet. It’s so awesome how the Lord knows his children so well. He knew that he needed the pamphlet there to help him. It’s fun. I love this work.

We got a call a few weeks ago from the Primary Presidency asking if for the 5th Sunday we could come for sharing time and teach them how to role play. Let me tell you, primary+roleplay=funny experience. The moment we turned them loose to practice with their neighbor they broke out into arguments on who was going to be the friend first. They did a whole bunch of crazy things. Some were actually taking it seriously, others were sitting there starting at the wall and some were almost in a fist fight and not willing to do anything at all. I guess that is how primary is. One crazy adventure.

So part of our area is really country as you know. We seem to always run into some of the funniest people out there. We are working with a guy that we found not to long ago by a prompt to tract the street. Not sure if you remember that story. None the less we have been meeting with him on and off. We had a lesson not to long ago and he was telling us some crazy things that he did at his home. He built a giant gun power cannon. He was telling us all the things that have happened to him while using the cannon. He almost blew off his leg at one point. He then was telling us that one of his favorite things to do is eat frog and also quail. He wants to catch some for us and let us try some.  He also loves moonshine. He drinks it all the time. That is something that we are trying to help him with. We hope he will be able to stop drinking it. Let me tell you that stuff smells horrible. It burnt my nostrils when he was drinking it and I was on the other side of the room. He says that he can only take little sips because his throat closes up and won’t let him swallow. I told him that should be a sign enough that he should not drink that stuff. He said that when we are done with our mission we should come back and visit him so we can go shoot guns and blow up stuff and ride real fast on dirt bikes hillbilly style.

Well I guess it’s official that the Hansen Family is no longer in California. Super sad. I hope that you make it to Florida alright. I know you will.

So we had a lesson the other day with one of our investigators. At the end we asked if there was any other thing that we could do for her. She sarcastically asked if we could mow her lawn. We jumped up and said yes. We then proceeded to mow her lawn. She thought it was funny but felt bad at the same time. It was fun. We don’t get to do that very often so it was fun. We also found a frog and showed it to her kids. They thought it was awesome.

Well I think that is all for this week. I love you all. Elder Hansen.
