Week 104

The past few days have been quite emotional that is for sure. I am not sure what to think. I run a gamete of emotions each day. Yesterday was an awesome day to finish off on. We had 3 investigators come to church. There was a homecoming of a sister in the ward. She came home from her mission in Taiwan. So there were a few non-member friends that showed up as well. So we were running around everywhere trying to meet everyone. Bishop asked that I share my testimony in sacrament meeting. At that point the cat was out of the bag that I was going home so that made it even more crazy as every other minute we were stopped and the members expressed how they enjoyed serving with me here in this area and that they would meet me. I felt so overwhelmed with emotions. I am so thankful that I get to serve a mission. I am also thankful for people who are in tune with the spirit. While the sister was giving her homecoming she could see that there were investigators sitting by us. She talked about how we can recognize and understand the promptings of the spirit. It was perfect. Exactly what our investigators needed to hear. She even brought up a question one of our investigators had about the book of Mormon in what she was reading. It was awesome. We also had someone just walk into church and asked if he could meet with us so he could learn more about the church. They are going by on Tuesday. Sadly I will not be there. I was bummed, but happy that they will meet with him. Elder Daw and I have had a blast together. Well, I guess thats all. I am sad to be leaving such an amazing place as the Washington Kennewick mission. I got the book of mormon by the way. I gave it to a family a few days ago and the missionaries will go by and see them next week I think. Just how I wanted it. I wanted to give it to someone I would not see again.

Well I guess that is all for the week. See you in about 30 hours or so.

Here are my bags ready to go.

Week 103

This week has been full of a lot of things. We had a week full of things to do. On Tuesday we traveled down and went to another districts district meeting. It was good. Its good to see the other missionaries in the zone and talk about things that they need. We had a blast. Then on Wednesday we went to our district meeting. It was the last district meeting of the transfer and so of course it was my last one of the mission so our district leader decided to have a funereal for us. I will send you some pictures and I have a few videos that I will show you when the time comes. Its fun, my emotions the past few days have been very mixed. I have been happy that I have had such a awesome time out here in Washington. Its been the best 2 years for my life by far. But for the most part I have been sad. I don’t want to go. I still feel like there is a lot for me to do in the next few days. But I know the Lord will be pleased with whatever amount of sacrifice I have made out here in the Lords WKM. I love the people here so much. We had a really fun dinner this last week on Friday. We went to a family who owns 50 chickens. Elder Daw and I made it a goal to catch one of them before we left. I will send you some pictures of our adventures. We also had stake reports this last week. We have seen an increase in convert baptisms in the stake this year as compared to last year. We have been seeing so many miracles its awesome. I know the Lord lives and loves each and every one of us. We were in a lesson yesterday with a less active man who is just going through a really hard time. He is just tired of having to do so much at church. He feels very unworthy of all the blessing that God has for him. While he was talking about all of the trials that he is going though. My mind went back to the book believing christ. He believes in him, but does not believe all that he says and has to offer. We just kelp talking about how Heavenly Father sent his son for this exact purpose. To give us peace in this life. The atonement is real. I have been studying a lot about the atonement. I know it is real. I have felt the effects in my life each day. We talked about the atonement, He is still to distant to accepts what we have shared with him. I pray that he will soften his heart and let the savior work miracles within him. We have zone conference tomorrow. We are excited to see everyone there. There will be a lot of missionaries giving their departing testimonies tomorrow. I will be one of them. Many tears will be shed. Tears of Joy. This mission has been such a blessing in my life. I love you all

Week 102

Well, this week was an interesting one. We had some cool things happen to us. We received a referral from a member one day at church. He lived a few streets away from them. So we stopped by after having dinner with them and set up an appointment with him. When we went back he was not home. So we just kept trying by and finally we caught him.  We were able to have a good 10 minute lesson with him. We talked about his life and how he really wants to change. He was homeless for about 6 months of his life and has been kicked out of a lot of places. He dropped out of high school in 9th grade and is now trying to get back into school and change his life around. He went to church when he was younger and wants to get back into things. As we were talking he just paused and said, you know what! I just need to get baptized. I really want to do that. I just need to do it. I wanted to do it when I was younger, but my did would not let me. He was raised by his grandparents and has just had a rough go at life. So we are going to help him take the steps that he needs to change. I know the gospel is truly what is going to change him. I have seen it in others and a ton within myself. I love how when you let it, the gospel truly changes you. You have to let it though.

We had district meeting this last week. We talked a lot about how we can be more effective at talking with people and teaching right away. We did some real plays and tried to talk to someone in under a minute. It was fun but kind of difficult at the same time. We are all making better effort to talk with everyone that we see. I have learned that as we talk with more people we are way happier as missionary. We saw as the whole zone works and talks to everyone we find more people to teach.

Well, we had exchanges this week. I stayed in the area and I had elder Decker a new missionary come with me. We had some cool stuff happen. I happy about that. We had a good lesson with one of our investigators and we had a member join us. They always help as you know. We talked about faith and how we develop faith. We read Alma 32. I loved the last few verses of that chapter. I didn’t remember how Alma teaches how then once we gain the faith in Christ we need to nourish the seed in help it to grow. I has happy that we had that lesson. They are slowly coming along. We hope they will gain the courage to come to church.

Well, I have lost all desire at this point to email, Sorry. So short. I will write more next week.

Week 101

I feel like I need to invite the family to do something for the next few weeks for email. I think its awesome the things that are going on at home. But I really would like to hear of the spiritual experiences that you are having throughout the week. The miracles that you saw as you acted in faith. I am curious to see as we pay more attention to these things how much more in occurs. Its really cool to see.

I want to share some experiences that happened this week that helped to strengthen my testimony of the Savior and his restored church. We were talking with the zone this last P-Day about how we need to really make it a goal to talk with more people each day. We set a goal that day that later that week every member of the zone was going to talk with at least 10 people about the gospel. It was really cool as we all went out and talked with everyone we could. So Elder Daw and I made it a point to get it and we eventually got 10 as we went throughout the day. We were just about to head home for the night and we saw a man pulling into his driveway and getting out of his car. So I quickly went over and started to talk with him. He quickly told me that he was not interested in anything that we had to say. I asked a few more questions to see if he just had a bad experience with missionaries in the past of something along those lines. He then just started talking about we were spreading lies and how we needed to stop deceiving people and things along those lines. He tried to tell us that we were saying false arguments about the bible and how everything that we share in a lie and it was made up by Joseph Smith. We were kind of stuck for a little while he went off trying to shake our faith. This is the part that I love. As he was saying all of these anti things the spirit was bringing back to my remembrance all of these truth of the gospel that he did not understand and how they could and were backed up scriptural. We never felt impressed to bash with anyone, but we are reminded by the spirit over and over on how this is true in situations like that. We got a few seconds to talk and we simply testified about the Book of Mormon and how you really need to read it before you try and disprove this message that we share. Elder Daw did an amazing job at that. He was so bold. It felt like what the scriptures say that we are raring young lions teaching the gospel. While we stood there it felt like there was literally and army of angels standing right behind us backing us up. It was an amazing experience. We left knowing that this was true even more then we did before. For anyone to truly know if this is true or not they really need to read the Book of Mormon. Its so important. There is so much power in that book. No matter what the anti people say about it. Its true. I know it with all my heart.

The next day we drove down to MLC. This was quite an emotional one for me. It was my last MLC. When its your last MLC they have you, at the end of the meeting, give your departing testimony. I was so nervous the whole meeting. Its was so good though. We talked about how to work with members more and what role they play in the conversion process. It was a big blessing. Elder Daw and I have felt for a long time that the zone needed to really understand the power of members. We set that as a focus for the zone at the begging of the transfer and we were now able to help the zone take the next steps forward. So the time clicked on and as it came closer and closer to my turn to somehow sum up what my mission has meant to me. It was a roller coaster of emotion. I was sad, happy, full of joy, and so many other things. The spirit was so strong. I walked up and president ware greeted me with a hug and expressed how much he loved me and was so proud of me and then I turned  and looked at all of the amazing leaders of this mission. The Lords WKM. I could not hold back the tears. I testified of our Savior and many other things. I was and is such a privilege to be serving a mission. I has blessed my life in so many ways. I love how this is a living church. The Lord understands that the world is always changing and we are always blessed to have that prophet to tell us what to do when we need to change and withstand the ways of the world. Its amazing. It was sad that I had so say good but to so many of my former companions this last week. I wont see them again before I they get home and we move on to the next phase of our lives. Its crazy. I love this so much.

So later that week we had a zone meeting were we were able to teach and help the zone understand a little better how we can work with members of the church to unite us to the purpose of missionary work. We learned a lot. We have been really working on making the time at dinner a really spiritual experience. We are trying to direct the conversation to the savior and the Gospel and we have had some really spiritual experiences with the members of the church here in Yakima. One I hope I will never Forget. Okay so this is random, but I really need your help. I have somehow lost on of my SD cars with like 500 pictures on it from my mission. I have been looking everywhere for it. I need you all to pray that I can find it because I would hate to lose so many memories if I cant find it anywhere. I am bummed out about that right now. I guess it somehow fell out of my backpack somewhere. I don’t know where. I hope I find it.

We started teaching a new family this last week. The wife in from Colombia and the husband is from Greece. They have quite a crazy story of how they met, but they are awesome. The wife is actually a therapist. When she told us that I thought of Alison and how she does that too. That was cool. They are really funny. The husband when he lived in Greece owned his own restaurant. We are trying to see if he will make us some really good food. I said he would, I hope that is soon.

It sounds like you are having a lot of fun in Orlando. I am glad that you are getting so involved in the ward. That is the best way to transition into a new area. Just jump right in and start serving others. Thats what I have seen has helped. Just move on and help other people. You will begin to love the area in no time.

Week 100

This week has been another good week. The temperatures have really cooled down a lot which is nice. They are supposed to go back up really high again the next few days. Welcome to summers in Washington. So first off there is a big fire in the northern part of our mission that they are having a hard time keeping contained so if you could please include this in your prayers that would be awesome. They are sending up groups of members to help clean up what has just happened to the Wanatchie area. Unfortunately our stake was not invited so we are not able to help. It would be a lot of fun to do that. The stake right next to us gets to go so thats kind of lame as well. Anyways, we had a few good lessons this week with some of our investigators. On Monday we found 2 new investigators which was really awesome. They committed to read the Book of Mormon. We had a return appointment for later that week, but they weren’t there. SO now we got to try and track them down again like most of the people we teach. This summer has been rough because of the fact that no one is home. Most of our investigators are convinced that august in the month that they want to be taught. So we have been counting down the days when they get off of vacation and finish summer classes so that we can meet with them again. But they Lord is really helping us find more people to teach. We have set a goal as a mission to have every companionship find 2 new investigators a week. We are doing are part and acting in faith.

We had a lesson with a part member family this last week. She told us that she was getting really nervous because of she is going into surgery this on Wednesday. We talked about faith and how we can have faith that the Lord will watch over us. She then requested that we giver her a blessing. The blessing went really well. At the end of the blessing she was in tears and said that that was so powerful and that the whole time she felt like she was floating and really warm like someone was hugging her. We were happy that the spirit was recognized and that she was feeling a lot better. We are going tomorrow one more time to see them before she got up to Seattle for the surgery.

We had a lesson again this week with our messianic Jew friend. She is slowly coming around. I can tell you that I have learned a lot from studying for her. I never knew how complex the Law of Moses really is. But in short she does not understand how the law has been fulfilled because it does not say that in the bible. . .  Yeah If I had a dollar for every time someone has said that to me I would be walking away form my mission with a lot of money. The best part is it truly does say all things that we believe in the bible. I have found it. So I never really know what people are talking about when they say that its not in there. . .  because it is.

We had district meeting this last week on how to teach people and not lessons. Its always a really good reminder. I feel like there are times when I am really good at that and times when I struggle. Its hard to always be on your game at all times. To know the needs of the people that you teach. But its a good thing to always remember. We had an awesome sacrament meeting again this last week. There are a lot of really powerful speakers in this ward. A lot of really good experiences that they talk about. It seems like the bishop is having the speakers talk about some topics that are really being stressed on for this day and age. Things like following the prophet and trusting that he really is a true prophet and also the dangers of pornography. It seems like the bishop is really striving to address the needs of the ward members.

I made a PBnJ sandwich the other day and as I went to spread the peanut better this is what happened. . .  I made a wave out of the peanut better. It was really cool. I just had to take a few pictures to always remember the awesome sandwiches that I make. I got that from Ryan actually the king of making sandwiches.

The Yakima Stake had a trek this last week. All the kids came back with fun stories about the adventures that they had. They seemed to have very similar experiences as we did on our trek. Kids getting ran over by handcarts, and having a blast while working hard in the heat. They actually got rained on the first two days so they had to push through the mud. That sounded not to fun.

Well I guess that is all for this week.

Week 99

That is awesome to see that everyone is having a good time. I can’t believe Ella now has a few new pets. I wonder how long it will take for midget to eat them up. . . You better keep them away form one another. I remember when one of our birds almost got eaten by the Zimmerman dog once. That was somewhat of traumatic experience for the bird. It even lost some of its head feathers because of that. So keep him away.

We have experience a lot of amazing miracles this last week. I just wanted to start this letter of this way. Elder Daw and I hear form time to time form people that we talk with about how wicked the world is becoming and how some people are legitimately scared and are preparing for the end days. I just have to say while yes there are some things to come in the future, must we not forget that the Lord is still completing his work. He is still working and will continue to work. I can’t help but look at all of these amazing things that happen each and every day that might go unnoticed if you were not looking for them. Here are a few of them form this last week.

On Tuesday we had an appointment with a lady that we had been in contact with for a little while. We brought a member with us to this appointment. The spirit was so strong. The lady opens up and talks about how she is looking for a church that her whole family could enjoy. She had grown up Jehovah Witness and her husband was some other faith I cant quite remember what he was. She talked about how she really wanted to know what we believed and what not. So we were able to teach her the restoration and giver her a copy of the book of Mormon. She committed to read it and asked us to stop by in a few weeks when she is done with this big project thing that she has to complete for her work. There are still people here that want to hear about the restored gospel. We are so excited to show her how the gospel will bless her family. The member that was with us did an awesome job explaining about how the gospel blesses our family and how it brings us closer together.

Earlier in the day on Tuesday we were out in the country and we swung by to see one of our potential investigators. She was home, which was a miracle, and she had a few minutes for us to talk to her. We talked to her about the book of Mormon and how she can read it and find out that it is true. She told us that her mom is actually a member and how she went to church a few times when she was younger. She does not remember much but she did like it. So we talked a little longer and were able to giver a copy of the book of Mormon and then left it at that. This is the cool part. About 3 day later of so we get a text message for her saying that she had been reading in the book of Mormon and had a question. We both read that are were supper exited. We asked what the question might be. Later that day she responded and said that she found the answer. Something about Joseph Smith. She had been reading his account and the account of the others that had seen the plates. Then the next day she texted us again and said that she had another question. She said, I know that Nephi the Father of Lehi who is being persecuted, but what record is Nephi writing? We were so excited when she said that as well. She has been reading and understand parts of what she is reading. Its been cool. That has never happened to us before.

After that lesson we went down the road to go and see a less active lady. She was home as well. She is going through a lot of hard times. This was one of the many days that we have had this week where it has been over 100 out side. She comes out of the house and starts talking to us about her life. It was so hot. We were roasting. So I said a silent prayer asking that we would not die and be able to help her. We talked to her for a little while more and then as we were leaving elder daw said that even though it was really hot outside, he did not feel it all that much. I said the same thing and said that I had prayed that we would not be hot. It was an answer to our prayers.

We also was able to catch a part member family later that night that we never are able to get in. We were able to get to know them. They slowly starting to open up to missionaries. We are excited to go by and see them again sometime.

The next day we had transfers. They put me in charge of directing the transfer site in Yakima. Its the midway point of the mission. So everyone the goes up north and down south meet there. So everything went well until we get a text from the assistance saying that they left the tri cities like and hour and a half late. So we had to wait form them and when they finally came no one wanted to listen and it was so hot. But we eventually got everyone where they needed to be. SO that was another miracle.

We had a zone breakfast and a zone leadership counsel meeting on Saturday. We had a good discussion on goals and plans that we are going to make to help us reach our goals as a zone and a mission. We have all felt really impressed to be using the members a lot more to help us with this work. We find that when we really act in faith and use the members in each teaching opportunity everything goes a lot better. Plus its hard to help people come to church if they do not have any friends. We were talking with a recent convert about that and she said that if it was not for her friends that  helped her along the way she would have never made the choice to be baptized. Its was another answer to our prayers that we need to have members more in everything that we do.

There are a few missionaries in the zone that are training. We are always excited to have new missionaries. They are always way excited to get to work. Its fun to help them get into the work.

We had a crazy Sunday yesterday. We had ward counsel meeting and then 3 hours of church. We had to then jet over and have our stake correlation meeting. Everything is going well there. The work in this area is on fire. There are some unites in this area that are baptizing almost every week. The members down there are doing an awesome job helping to find and fellowship. So after that meeting we were invited to teach mission prep. We were very excited to do that. I love teaching mission prep. We talked a lot about become true disciples of Jesus Christ and how we can develop charity. We finished by talking about how we can use the book of Mormon in every aspect of the work. The spirit was strong and it seemed like they really enjoyed hearing form some full time missionaries. A few of them have their calls and will leave in October and other times. We are so blessed to be able to serve at this time. So blessed. The Lord is poring out miracle after miracle.

We have found that as we act in faith more with our planning the day always goes so much better. We have been really working hard at following the spirit in planning and the Lord is showing us the way. Oh we also had an investigator come to church yesterday!! She has been talking about coming for some time now and she finally took the step of faith and loved it. Church was also so full of the spirit. I was happy that she came that week. We even had a musical number with the piano, Violin, and a guitar!! That was the first and probably the last time I will ever see the guitar in sacrament meeting. They received special permission to use it. They played come thou fount of every blessing and they played it in a way the the old pioneers might have played it. Its was awesome. We talked to her after and she said that she loved coming to church and she is going to come tonight to the ward activity that we are having. It will be fun to have her their. Well, I think that is the most of what has happened this week. I know this church is true. I love this work more then anything else.

Week 98

Sounds like all is good in Florida. Happy that all is unpacked.

We received transfer calls on Saturday. Elder Daw and I are both staying. We are really excited about this. This week has been really hard — not going to lie. All of our investigators are going away for like 2 to 3 weeks and we are having a hard time getting in touch with all of the other investigators. We also had a few people try our faith. That gets old real quick. I am okay with questions if there is never a hidden agenda. They always make statements that never make sense and they never let us go. We make it a point not to ever contend back. We just patiently wait for the time that we can teach and testify. To all who read this let me make this clear. God is the only one who decided who is going to Heaven and Hell. No one can tell you whether you are going to Heaven or Hell. Only God decides that. So if anyone tells you otherwise keep in mind who’s plan this is and how they have no authority to say that. Then politely say that we are going to find people that are actually interested in learning more about our message and leave. Love and pray for them and ask for their heart to be softened one day.

We had interviews with President Ware this last week. That was really nice. We talked about some very insightful things. We talked about some awesome memories that we have had together. It was comforting. I really felt the spirit. We also had a really good exchange with the Assistants. I always learn something new when they come out with us. It seems like the Washington Kennewick Mission is growing. We are receiving 28 new missionaries this week. It’s sad to see another group of them go home. Missionaries that I have grown really close to. I guess it’s the next step but yet it’s sad.

I have been learning a lot of good things from the spirit. We had an awesome lesson today about sacrifice in gospel principles. It’s cool so see how sacrifice is always a part of living the gospel. It’s hard, yet a very essential part of coming unto Christ. I love how the prophets of old knew there was going to be a falling away, yet they did all they could because they knew the things that they did then, would really effect us in our day. They knew that not a lot people would accept now, but later on in God’s plan. Talk about sacrifice.

Well I guess that is all for this week. I love you all.

Elder Hansen WKM
